Bharat Varsha

  • India has been known by various names throughout history, reflecting different cultural, historical, and geographical aspects.

  • The Constitution of India defines the name India, i.e. Bharat

Jambudvipa

  • Jambudvipa (berry island) was used in ancient scriptures before the term Bhārat became widespread.

Aryawarta

  • Land of Arya, used in Hindu  Baudhayana, Vasistha , Manava Dharmasastra , referring to the areas of the Indo-Gangetic Plain and surrounding regions settled by Indo-Aryan tribes.

Brahmavarta

  • Manusmriti describes Brahmavarta as the region between the rivers Sarasvati and Drishadvati in India

Bharat

  • Term Bharat has been used in Many Puranas, Vedas

Vishnu Purana

Uttaraṃ yat samudrasya himādreścaiva dakṣiṇam.

varṣaṃ tad bhārataṃ nāma bhāratī yatra santatiḥ.




 

  • Describes "Bharata" as the land between the southern sea and the northern snowy Himalayan Mountain.



 King Bharata

  • King Bharata, the son of Dushyant and Shakuntala, who was an ancestor of the Kauravas and Pandavas.

Bharat Chakravarti

  • Eldest son of First Jain Tirthankar Rishabhnath '

  • Derived from the name of the Vedic community of Bharats, who are mentioned in the Rigveda.

Epigraphical references

  • Bharat Varsh, in a geographical sense, is mentioned in the

  • Hathigumpha inscription of King Kharavela (1st century BCE). The inscription clearly states that Bharat was named after Bharat, the son of the first Jain Tirthankar, Rishabhdev.

India

Hindustan

  • Popularised after Islamic Invasion in India.

  • Hindush word use by Achaemenid emperor Darius I, when he conquered the Indus valley in about 516 BCE

  • Sindh was referred to as Hindustan in the Naqsh-e-Rustam inscription of Sassanid emperor Shapur I in c. 486 CE.

  • Later, the Persians, Arabs and Mughal also used the term Hind or Hindustan to refer to the land of Indus.

  • Initially Britishers used term Hindoostan/ Hindusthan
